Description:
As you enter through the Acropolis entrance (propylaea) you see the 2500 year old Parthenon which was dedicated to the goddess, Athena.  It is a massive structure made of solid marble and remarkably impressive.  Although I was hoping we could get closer, we did see a lot of the detail and took lots of pictures from various angles.  If possible purchase tickets to an evening at the Odeion of Herode theatre at the Acropolis.  We spent the most enchanting evening listening to a symphony while sitting on the same seats as centuries earlier, Romans sat to watch their plays.  Thankfully we did have cushions to sit on.  In the Ancient Agora, we enjoyed the ruins tremendously and the Temple of Hephaistos which is much more intact than the Parthenon as it has most of its original roof and columns.  Also you are able to view up close this wonderful temple.  We were able to get pics of the underside of its columns.

A place steeped in history, to walk and imagine what it might have been like when it was a thriving place. Then wonder how they would feel to see how we live now and how much we admire the work they did without the machinery we take for granted now. I wondered as I walked around "did they think it was going to last this long and be protected in a way they couldn't protect it". History wasn't a favourite subject at school and its only since travelling and seeing these magnificent sites that I now love to hear about it.

The Parthenon, no doubt! To reach it, you walk up the steps of Acropolis hill. You actually don't see it while climbing up the steps (perhaps because of the multitudes of tourists walking around you). Once you reach the top, you enter this gate (actually a small building). When you reach the end of the gate, lo and behold... the grandeur of the Parthenon greets you! Walk around the grounds. You'll feel a sense of history. You feel like you're walking with the gods.

In a word..... WOW!!!!... this is just awesome... to walk through the same arches as all those people SOOOOOO long ago... it was really quite surreal.... the view over Athens is amazing .... the Parthenon itself is just an incredible feat of architecture.... the restoration process is going to take longer than the original building!~!! .... The traffic in and around Athens itself was crazy.... but loved the little Byzantine churches dotted throughout the city.... just beautiful!!

The temple complex on Acropolis is a well-known monument around the world. Parthenon is the main temple and well worth seeing if you are after a part of human history. If you think ancient temples are only stones stay away :P BTW, don't miss the museum nearby ;)
