Tik'al National Park
About Tik'al National Park
Considered one of the largest ancient ruined cities of the Maya Civilization, Tik'al was once a cultural and population center. Tik'al reached its peak during the Classic Period between 200 AD and 900 AD.
When going to Tikal (and everyone should go) splurge and stay at one of the two hotels in the area. After spending 6 months living in 'residence' it was fantastic to stay at a glorious hotel with indoor plunbing (including hot water) and comfortable beds. After a day of hiking in the park and going on the zip line just outside the boundary of the park, you will appreciate a bed that lets you relax. Payment Accepted:
Getting there:
Tik'al can be accessed by flight from Belize within 3 hours by flight, or by road over a day.

Oct 31, 2008 Tikal is amazing!! Begining the day with the sunrise from a top a temple, looking out across the central grounds, then moving along to climb and observe many Mayan pyramids and structures. The city has been partially excavated, many of the ancient buildings remain under the layers of jungle that have covered them like a lush green blanket. As you make your way through the park you become aware of just how big that city really is. From ancient ball courts to the Jaguar temple to the housing structures, they are all there for you to see and explore. If you get the chance...do it, it is is a must see!! Also, there are many other Mayan sites near Tikal. Nov 2, 2008 Tikal is a wondrous place. You can't help but imagine how amazing it must have been when the area was once a thriving city. Howler monkeys and coatis and other creatures keep you company as you climb temples and walk around the complex. A must visit in Guatemala! Jan 13, 2009 I would definitely recommend the sunrise tour. The tour begins at 3 or so in the morning but you will arrive in the park before dawn and be on top of Templo IV (I believe) as the sun rises. It's an amazing experience to watch the sun rise as toucans race through the tree tops and howlers scream to start the new day. I believe you can get this experience by staying in/close to the park, however that is more expensive than getting a 5 buck a night hostel in Flores. Enjoy! Oct 9, 2011 This has got to be one of the best ruined cities in Central America. It is well worth your time. As a side note, part of the original Star Wars was shot here. You can walk up to the top of the temple where the scene was shot and get the exact same view. But unlike most movie sets, this is the real thing. Jan 8, 2009 the park itself is amazing. it's a tropical jungle with wild animals roaming around (not dangerous) and these amazing ruins that sneak up on you. When you climb to the top (and it's worth the climb) you can see across the top of the canopy and it's an awe inspiring sight.
