Get to Panajachel, then visit the indigenous towns along the lake.  The villages are accessible by boat (boats come to Panajachel every few minutes).  We stayed at an American owned place called Casa Del Mundo.  It's a bit pricier than some of the other places along the lake, but we enjoyed it a lot.

Getting there:
You can get a chicken bus from Guatemala city, or you can arrange for a small van.  The chicken bus is cheapest, but the van is more luxurious.  Neither have bathrooms, nor stop, so be careful what you drink.

This is a beautiful part of Guatemala! The lake itself is a collapsed volcano crater and the surrounding villages are filled with artisans and beautiful indigenous people. Panajachel is a nice town to stay in - good food, good hotels, good shopping.

It's said to be one of the most beautiful lakes on earth. Definitely it is. Not to miss Santa Cruz, the only village not accesible by road. If you stay there, Casa Rosa is your place.

An incredibly beautiful lake in the heart of Guatemala. Numerous cities dot the shore and you can take boat rides across the lake to visit them. The lake is ringed by volcanoes.

Walk just a mile past town, you'll find an old compound that now serves as a hotel. Complete with guitars and a tower overlooking the lake and the distant volcanos.

See the notes I've written above. Lago Atitlan is surrounded by volcanoes. Go to Google Images and have a look. I think it beats Lake Como!
