Situated in the heart Guyana Shield (Guiana Highlands), Kaiteur National Park is noted for the many rivers and waterfalls situated in the high plateaus and steep escarpments.   The region is surrounded by pristine rainforests, which is a treat for trekkers.  In particular, Kaieteur Falls is a major park attraction.  This scenic waterfall is fed by the Potaro River, and drops 226 metres (741 feet).  It is considered one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world,

Several companies in Georgetown offer fly-in/fly-out day tours to visit Kaieteur Falls for around $200. Sometimes they will also stop at Oronduik Falls on the Brazilian border. There are also multi-day boat/hike/camping tours to reach the park. There are several hiking trails through the park, which has huge bromeliads, birds of paradise, etc. Keep an eye out for crested cock-of-the-rock birds in the trees and Golden poison dart frogs that live in the bromeliads.
