La Citadelle Laferrière, also known as the Citadelle Henri Christophe, is a mountain fortress perched on top of Bonnet-à-l'Evêque at an elevation of 900m, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.  Commissioned by the King Henri Christophe between 1805 and 1820 as a defensive fortification to keep Haiti safe from French incursions, this impressive structure is considered the largest fortress in the western hemisphere, covering an area over 10,000 square metres in size.  An estimated 20,000 people were involved in the construction of the site.

The fortress has withstood numerous earthquakes.
Getting there:
By Road:
Access by road is from Cap-Haïtien via the town of Milot.  You can park about 5km away from the base of the fortress, from which it is a brisk uphill hike.
