The sunrise from the summit is not to be missed. You'll have to get up early, and drive up to the top before 5AM or so, and be prepared for the cold. It's 10,000 ft, so even though it's hot on the beach, it'll be freezing at dawn on the top. The view of the sun, with the clouds below you is incredible. The colors can be quite amazing. After the sunrise, you can hike the trails nearby in the crater. Payment Accepted:

Aug 14, 2008 ever seen a sunrise above the clouds? simply amazing!!! it took a couple hours to drive up the mountain, so you have to start out @ about 3am. when you get up there its cold because youre so high up. the terrain is very unusual, like being on a red moon planet or something. when the sun starts to rise above the clouds, its like kryptonite, so powerful and beautiful, it makes you weak!!!! even got to partake it some Maui-Wowie w/ some cool locals-yah brah!! Oct 30, 2008 For the non-touristy experience go up for sunrise and then hike down the Sliding Sands trail and across the floor of the crater, taking in the moon-like surroundings and the silver-sword plants. With a permit you can camp in the crater and hike out at sea level the following day. You will never ever see stars like you do in that crater! Sep 27, 2008 Although a touristy thing to do, take one of the tours to see the sunrise over Haleakela then bike down to the beach. You go from 10000 feet to sea level with amazing views and experiences along the way! Practice braking a bike before you go...your hands get a little tired through the switchbacks! Related Links
