Jan 11, 2010 This is a great place for beginner snorkelers. It's easy to get to, with equipment rental right on the beach. You don't have to swim very far out to see a good variety of fish. Once I was watching a school of fish, then stood up and the water was only up to my knees. I've even seen turtles, but that is relatively rare for Hanauma Bay. The only downside is that is is very busy, so you should go early to avoid crowds. Since it is a marine preserve, you have to watch a video before going down to the beach. Feb 21, 2009 I enjoyed my trip to Hanauma Bay, but was disappointed in other people and their behaviour. Due to ignorant travellors and visitors, the reef is dead or dying. I was careful to not step or stand on any of the reef, but witnessed people actually diving from it and posing for photos on it. Shocking! I hope that one day this reef will see better days and more consciensious visitors. Jan 30, 2009 We were told this was the best place to go snorkeling on the island. Other than almost getting eaten by a really large fish it wasn't that exciting. Over crowded, cloudy water, and if the tide was out you didn't have that much water to swim in above the coral. I would skip it and head for the north shore where there are far less people and just as much fish and coral to explore. Sep 29, 2008 Hanauma bay is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to I went there when I was ten when my father was stationed in Hawaii, the water is crystal clear and the sealife of all different colours you see is amazing to look at I went snorkling there and it was great fun I suggest it to anyone who goes to the Big Island you wont regret it! Mar 27, 2009 Great place for snorkeling or just relaxing on the beach. Expect large crowds, so get there early. It's a nature preserve, so please be respectful of marine life and refrain from touching or walking on the coral. My husband and I were lucky enough to see a sea turtle while snorkeling!
