Chapel
Fresco
Paintings
The Sistine Chapel is located in the Vatican Museums.   The Sistine Chapel is particularly famous for Michelangelo’s Creation and Last Judgment frescoes.   These frescoes are very lifelike and colourful despite being 500 years old.   The Creation fresco covers around 12,000 square feet of ceiling, while the Last Judgment fresco spans the wall behind the altar.   These two humongous frescoes are considered to be Michelangelo’s best paintings.   Other artists who painted the Sistine Chapel include Botticelli and Raphael (the Raphael Cartoons tapestries are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London).  The Sistine Chapel is also sometimes called (mistakenly) the Sixteenth Chapel.

Anyway the Vatican City is where I started in Roma, my first full day here and up nice and early at the Vatican by 9am to miss the large crowds of other tourists and see it in relative peace which is in the Vatican Museum I got. I spent about 2 hrs wandering through relics and things that you couldn’t call antiques because they’re more than that and it feels demeaning to title them that. You can go to the Sistine Chapel without seeing most of the Museum but it’s an easy stroll around that is really pleasant to do. One girl fell into the fountain inside the museum and kept me laughing and grinning for a good while and still brings a grin to my face. But the thing that awed me the most had to be the Sistine Chapel. You’re not allowed to take photographs and you have to be dressed appropriately meaning no sleeveless tops shorts shorter than the knee and no skirts to short either. And it was a silent hall, still a place despite being packed with tourists that if you wanted you could say a prayer.

As I made my way through the crowd to the Chapel I was approached by a group of beggar children with a box they used to collect donations. Of course our guide had told us to ignore them. It was difficult but I managed to tear myself away from them and keep my money hidden. A few moments later my friend realized the children had used the box to cover that they were taking her money from her purse. I had mine in one of those dorky passport/money necklace things and was glad I did.

As for the Chapel itself: I truly felt the presence of God in the Chapel as I entered. The sense of history I felt was as rich as the paintings themselves. Gorgeous!

It takes some effort to get into the chapel, first the queue to get into the museum and then hald a mile later another queue to get into chapel itself. And then being inside the chapel itself also takes some effort, this is not for anyone who is claustophobic, saw one girl faint. But it is so worth it. The paintings are still as lifelike and colourfull as they were on their first day. One of the most impressive things was the fact that the whole ceiling was one painting, all the seperate paintings work so well together. You can not miss this piece of art when you're in Rome.

Totally worth seing if you are in Rome. Specially good with a good guide man native from the city... The attitudes of the guide will help you to understand the nature ofre the friendly and impulsive italian people which makes the tourist feel so confortable right after arrivint. The whole architectucure is worth seing calmly but if you cant because you are like me you have a tour group with limited time then just take a great canon camenra and take all the pictures you can and enjoy them calmly at home you ll be surprised of the thousand of details the photos will remind you

It was actually quite amazing!! Nothing at all like I expected! But beware, there are a lot of people outside of the Vatican who pickpocket, so keep your belongings close to you. The lines to the Vatican is incredibly long, and especially in the summer the heat is brutal. So bring a little fan, a bottle of water, sunblock and your set for the day. The Sistine chapel, is crowded but you will forget quite quickly when you are in awe of "The Creation of Adam" painting on the ceiling its quite amazing!
