About Margit Sziget/Island
Margaret Island ( Hungarian : Margit-sziget , German : Margaretheninsel , Croatian : Margitin otok [ 1 ] ) is a 2.5 km (1.4 miles) long island, 500 meters (550 yards) wide, (0.965 km² (225 acres) in area) in the middle of the Danube in central Budapest , Hungary . It belongs administratively to the 13th district. The island is mostly covered by landscape parks, and is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are reminders of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious center. The island spans the area between the Margaret Bridge (south) and the Árpád Bridge (north).
The island was called Nyulak szigete (English: Island of the Rabbits) in the Middle Ages, and it received its current name after Saint Margaret (1242–1270), the daughter of Béla IV of Hungary who lived in the Dominican convent on the island. Other names of the island were Nagyboldogasszony-sziget, Úr-sziget, Budai-sziget, Dunai-sziget, Nádor-sziget, Palatinus-sziget during different periods of its history. The Margaret Island is not equal to Hajógyári Island which is the home of the Sziget festival. Payment Accepted:

Apr 2, 2011 One of the best outdoor places in Budapest. Visit Margit Island when you feel like walking on green grass and smelling fresh flower-scented air, being away from cars, smog and noise or doing sports (especially running). Once you're on the island try Bringó-hintó - you have to do a bit of pedaling but its so sooo much fun! And when you're ready to relax and chat away by a latte, check out Holdudvar. Enjoy the sunny Budapest. Aug 26, 2008 I stayed at the Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitziget. An excellent hotel with a great spa, reminds me of the natural hot water springs in Iceland. The hotel is relatively close to downtown and is placed on the St Margaret's island in the middle of the Danube river. There is a lot of outdoor activities on the island and only a few minutes by bus if you want to go downtown. The downside is the price. It is very expensive. Mar 3, 2009 An island on Danube, connecting Arpad`s and Margit`s bridge. A wonderful place for spending long and hot summer days alone or with your family and friends. It`s a little green spot coveredi in trees and grass in the centre of huge Budapest.
