Mohacs has a lot of historic and cultural sights. Being a very important crossing on the river Danube, it has been a strategic city for centuries. Lot of Serbian and Slavic people inhabit the city and mingle with the Hungarian population. You can visit numerous churches: Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, and the main festivities of the "Busójárás" procession at the end of February offer a colorful mesh of various cultures. Yet the main significance of the city is related to one of the greatest loss of Hungarian history. The unfortunate end of the Battle at Mohács in 1426 against the Turkish invaders was the beginning of the 150 years of Turkish rule over Hungary. The historic site of the battle is today a museum and a memorial park, only a few kilometers outside the city borders.
