The oft photographed Gullfoss (“Golden Falls”) is a double cascade waterfall that is considered one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls and is also one of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions. The glacial Hvita River flows down a curved three step staircase before plunging powerfully down the double cascade.  The first cascade is 11 meters high, and the second is 21 meters high, while the amount of water going down the waterfall averages 140
cubic meters per second.  The water cascades into a deep and dark crevase, producing a loud roar, while the sprays create a beautiful rainbow effect.
