Askja Volcano
About Askja Volcano
Askja volcano is situated quite far from Reykjahlid. But if you are close to it you have to go there and see it, unforgettable and just magic. Askja is a 50 square km caldera in the Dyngjufjoll mountains. In an eruption in 1875, an area of 11 square km on the south-eastern side of Askja caved in to form Lake Oskjuvatn, the deepest lake in Iceland, 217 m and a tephra crater known as Viti (Hell) north of it, with blue water where you can take an unforgettable bath. On the way you have to go to Herdubreid - the Queen of Icelandic Mountains.

Apr 29, 2009 The best place in Iceland. You have to go there and see it ..... There are trips organized by some companies but if you rent a car you can go on your own. On the way you should stop and climb Herdubreid. Its amazing mountain called Queen of Icelandic Mountains ...... Askja is a huge crater lake ..... its great and when you see it you would be amazed by it ..... it also has smaller crater lake with blue water where you can take a bath and feel like in the movie ....so enjoy and have fun Feb 16, 2010 If you go to the Askja area, you should walk to a small lake called Víti, there you can bath in a thermal water. Víti is about 25 min walk from a parking lot. Another thing you could do there, walk into canyon called Drekagil (Dragons Canyon). I recommend you camp at Mt. Herðubreið instead of trying to camp close to Askja, because it's lot of sand there and can sometimes be a bit windy. Related Links
