Hallgrímskirkja is a church in Reykjavík and is the tallest building (74,5 m) in Reykjavík. The architect is Guðjón Samúelsson, the former state architect. Hallgrímskrikja was opened in 1986. Hallgrímskirkja is named after Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674) a priest and a poet. The church is located on Skólavörðuholt and in front of it is a statue of Leifur Eríksson, who is believed to be the first European to go to North America, the statue was a gift from the US.
