Hallgrímskirkja is a church in Reykjavík and is the tallest building (74,5 m) in Reykjavík. The architect is Guðjón Samúelsson, the former state architect. Hallgrímskrikja was opened in 1986. Hallgrímskirkja is named after Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674) a priest and a poet. The church is located on Skólavörðuholt and in front of it is a statue of Leifur Eríksson, who is believed to be the first European to go to North America, the statue was a gift from the US.

Probably the most photographed monument in Iceland. If you go to Reykjavík you should get yourself photographed in front of the church. You can also up to the top of the tower and get a great view over the city.

I enjoyed the visit in the later afternoon, when the sun was pinky-orange-golden, certainly also go to the tower to see the overview of the whole city.
