Cellular Jail
About Cellular Jail
The Cellular Jail was built by the British in the 19th century for housing political prisoners from the mainland. The original jail had seven wings, arranged in a hub and spoke configuration, but only three wings remain. The Japanese occupied the Andaman Islands during WWII and used the jail to house British POWs. The Cellular Jail is now a National Memorial.

Nov 15, 2009 This jail was used by the British to put pesky Indian independence fighters away (sometimes for good). The place was know as "Kala Pani" by the Indians (literal translation: Black water). The jail initially had six winds, though only three survive today. It is now a national monument and museum - a must see if you ever visit Port Blair. Oct 18, 2008 We walked to the Cellular Jail via Aberdeen Bazaar. The jail museum had a room full of photos of prisoners who had been inmates here. Very sobering. It is possible to climb to the top of the central hub tower and look out over the remaining wings.
