Apr 25, 2009 Thiksey Gompa is without a doubt one of Ladakh's most impressive monastery. The location is superb, perched on a hill it is practically a town with many whitewashed huts where the monks live covering the hillside. The sight is simply superb and will no doubt make an impression on you! Inside it is equally magnificent with beautiful colourful murals and statues, amongst which the 14m-high statue of the future Buddha is the most spectacular, with a striking golden face, turquoise robes and red headdress. The views from the rooftops are absolutely magnificent with Stok Kangri looming high above the fertile plains of the Indus River on one side and completely barren desert on the other. This is what makes Ladakh such a unique and special place! You can visit in the early morning to witness the puja (prayers), but it is impressive at any time of day, although to get the best shot, come in the morning when the sun will shine brightly on the hill. I came back many times and every time discovered new things as the gompa is quite large and full of different halls. Sep 5, 2009 One of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, and certainly one of the most beautiful ones, the Thiksey monastery is a place you cannot miss when visiting the region. It has a grand statue of Lord Buddha, almost two-storey tall, that takes your breath away with its beauty and finesse. Visit to this serene, peaceful place is an insight into the rich Ladakhi culture, and an experience unforgettable in its simplicity and pureness! Dec 19, 2009 The Thiksey Gompa (Monastery) is one of the oldest of the Gelukpa order of Tibetan monks. It has a huge statue of the future or Maitreya Buddha and a lot of other artefacts and thangkas. Prayers recited along with the beating of drums and blowing of long horns is an experience to remember. A memorable experience for sure when you visit this beautiful place in Ladakh near the capital Leh. Related Links
