Hawa Mahal (Hindi: हवा महल, translation: "Palace of Winds" or “Palace of the Breeze”), is a palace in Jaipur, India. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, and designed by Lal Chand Usta in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god. Its unique five-storey exterior is also akin to the honeycomb of the beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas that are decorated with intricate lattice work.[1] The original intention of the lattice was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen, since they had to observe strict "purdah" (face cover).[1][2][3]

Built of red and pink sandstone, the palace is situated on the main thoroughfare in the heart of Jaipur’s business centre. It forms part of the City Palace, and extends to the Zenana or women's chambers, the chambers of the harem. It is particularly striking when viewed early in the morning, lit with the golden light of sunrise

A must to see in the pink city!

Jaipur's most distinctive landmark is a remarkable, delicately honeycombed pink-sandstone structure. The five-storey building was constructed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawaj Pratap Singh to enable ladies of the royal household to watch the life and processions of the city. It's an amazing example of Rajput artistry, and remains a great place for people-watching from behind the small broken shutters.

The top offers stunning views over the Jantar Mantar and the City Palace in one direction, and over Siredeori Bazaar in the other.

Has lost its glory over the years. Place around the Hawa Mahal is known as johri bazaar, famous traditional market of jaipur. Hawa Mahal would interest foriegn tourists though because of heritage factor associated with it, otherwise a blank place. Look out for the vicinity to carry souvenirs (Bangles, Jaipuri Quilts, Semi-precious jewellery, Sweets, Show Peices etc.) for frnds and acquntncs. LMB is a good food joint and a must visit. Al da best for your visit.

You can't miss this place as it is right in the heart of Jaipur, within the city walls and on the main drag. The name translates as "Palace of Winds" due to the 953 small windows in the building front, which would allow ladies to view life outside of the palace, but remain unseen.

you might want to go out on the balcony accross the street for better photography opportunities.
