A huge city.  It has some fascinating history and definitely a bit nicer for being on the shore, but a huge city.  I prefer the smaller places in India.  From Chennai you can easily get to Pondicherry, which is a really cool colonial town or mamallapurum (sp??) to see the rock carvings.
