May 13, 2010 One of the best pieces of art history preserved over thousands of years in the rock cut caves of Ajanta about 80km from Aurangabad city in Maharashtra State are well preserved even after all these years of lying undiscovered till the British found them on a hunting expedition near the Waghora river. The walls are painted and pillars are exquisitely carved besides the lovely statues of the Buddha in different poses in most of the caves are a delight to see and admire for posterity. These caves are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jan 12, 2009 Spectacular ancient caves/temples cut into the cliff surrounding a scenic valley. More than just a few caves, the artwork is amazing and captivating. It's a whole day trip and is best seen AFTER the Ellora caves as the trip is much more relaxing.
