Jan 15, 2010 Elephanta island is a 45-minute boat-ride from the Gateway of India in South Mumbai. If you go in early enough, you can spend the day walking around the Caves which have rock carvings by monks done centuries ago. Huge sculptures really fill the caves. Have a lazy lunch at one of the cafes on your way down and spend the afternoon shopping for lovely trinkets before catching your boat back in the evening. Oct 17, 2011 The Elephanta caves, also known formerly as Gharapuri, was beautiful. We reached the place by boat and then, by a toy train. The caves were beautifully carved and we even went to have luscious food at a restaurant. The caves had ancient sculptures on the walls and contained stories from the Hindu mythology.
