Sangiran is located 15 km north of Solo and is the archaeological site where the prehistoric 1.7 million year old Java Man was found in 1936.  The excavation site covers approximately 50 square kilometers and is now a World Heritage site.  In addition to Java Man, over 60 other fossils have been found here, making it one of the world’s best sources for human fossils..  There is a small museum at the site displaying some of the fossil finds.
