Puncak Jaya (also known as the Carstensz Pyramid, after the dutch explorer Jan Carstensz) is the highest mountain on the island of New Guinea, as well as the highest island peak in the world.  It is part of the Seven Summits of the world, and while the mountain is not one of the taller of the summits at 16,023ft (4885 metres), it is one of the more technically challenging.  Most of the ascent will be over exposed exposed rock and steep terrain.

The normal route up Puncak Jaya offers incredible views of Ngga Pulu, retreating glaciers, turquoise lakes, valleys, and even the coast of New Guinea.

It should be noted that the surrounding region is politically unstable, and the region can be closed off with no notice.  It is best to check news reports in advance of arrival.

Getting there:
Situated in the island of New Guinea in the Sudirman Range.  Puncak Jaya is best accessed via the Wamena airport.  A permit is required to enter the region, and the mining areas around the peak are strictly off limits.  You will most likely need to join a climbing group in order to attempt the mountain.
