The UNESCO World Heritage site of Prambanan is a huge 9th-10th century Hindu temple compound (the largest in Indonesia) that consists of 224 temples.  It was abandoned soon after its construction and crumbled due to time and the effects of a major 16th century earthquake.  Prambanan was restored starting in 1918 and continuing for many years afterwards, and now consists of a combination of restored temples and ruined temple foundations.  The Java earthquake of 2006 damaged the compound and resulted in the closure of some temples.

The three main shrines are the central 47 meter tall Shiva temple and the Vishnu and Brahma temples.  There are also 221 smaller shrines surrounding them.  The Shiva temple contains four temples, each containing statues.  Nearby the Vishnu and Brahma statues are statues of their mounts.  Other highlights are the bas-reliefs on the sides of the temple that show the Ramayama legend, and the famous sharp, jagged style of the Prambanan temples

I want to cry when I think of this place. Cry, in a good way that is. It is probably the most earth shattering place I have ever been to. I have a love for all things old and ancient, but this place really moved me to another level. It is not surprising that this 9th Century Mahayana Buddhist monument is listed on UNESCO's world heritage site. Even from a distance this grand, layered intrinsic creation of perforated stupas and buddhas is striking. Climbing the steep steps to the highest square platform was hard in the sweltering heat. (bring bottled water with you, you will need it). I was told by my guide that is was designed to be somewhat of a 'challenge' to climb as it is an analogy for life -it's hard to climb upwards, but you climb higher to reach nirvana. (when I say challenge to climb, I only mean that it can be hard on your calves due to the continuous steep incline of the stone steps) Admittance is free. You are allowed to take pictures. Bring sunscreen. You will receive no mercy from the harsh Sun unless you shelter yourself in the shade of giant stupa. Sadly, most of the Buddha's heads were missing, but even so, this place was truly magical. This temple has a wealth of history and so much mystery surrounding it. It lay hidden for many many years under volcanic ash and lush jungle at one point. It was rediscovered and remains a place of pilgrimage.

it's located in Magelang so if you want to travel with low cost you just go to bus station and get 1 to go there. once you arrive, you can walk to get in to the gate or you can choose "becak" or "delman". just make sure you ask for the price and if they offer you to visit some small temples you have to ask the extra price to visit that places. inside you can choose to use train or just walk to reach the Borobudur temple. You better visit this place early in the morning so you can see the best view. fog, mountains sunrise etc.. don't forget to use hat :). and you better go there not on the weekend because it will be crowd.

I visited Borobudur on the second day of my short escapade to Yogyakarta during a low season, September 2011. Left the hotel at about 8 am and arrived in the temple in about 1 hour. it is a massive brown grey structure, like flying saucer. Climbing the steps slowly to the top, I realised its magnificence. I particularly like the varied colour stones that is used to build the bell-shaped domes at the top circular platform. Walking around the platform, it was surprising to find two of them "destroyed" revealing buddha inside. Definitely a must go for tourist to Yogyakarta.

That this was one of the seven wonders in the world had me a little suprised. Non the less it is a beautiful temple. Every level has its own story. At the top you arrive at these stupa's. Within each stupa there are buddha's. It is a wonderful site. This buddhistic temple is a must see when you are in yogyakarta.

Borobudur is the biggest buddhist monument of the world 42c km from Yogyacarta. Looks like a mandala from the top, with 6 square shaped terrace and 3 round. There are lots of stupas on each level and in all of them there is a Buddha scuplture. It is an incredible experience to visit this place.
