The sultan’s palace Kraton is a city within a city that is now located within Yogyakarta. It is a walled city that was built duing the 18th century and is the home of the sultans of the Mataram Kingdom. Properly attired visitors may take a guided tour of the palace, which is full of attractive and decorated covered walks and shady courtyards. Some royal memorabilia such as a family tree, gifts and photographs are on display, and you can also admire the ornate reception hall.
The old town district of Kota Gede is located on the edge of Yogyakarta and was the original capital of the Matarman Kingdom. There is an interesting mosque in the district that houses the tomb of the first Muslim ruler in the area. Not much else is left from the 16th century glory days, but the old neighbourhood is still charming to walk around for a bit.

lookin at the present state of the kraton, its hard to imagine what was once a grand palace. but i was lucky that i was able to tour around town with the niece of the sultan and that made the difference. she explained some secret alleys and passage ways where the boats carrying the sultan go! and the secret bath pool (not open to the public then because of reconstruction!)

It's a living museum, with the royal family residing within its walls. The changing of time and adaptations to current conventions are well-documented here.

If you like traditional and historical place to visit...it would be the place..
