Persepolis was an ancient ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire. It was built during the reign of Cyrus II (Cyrus the Great) around 560 BC. Some scholars believe that Persepolis is a half built building that was never finished and had never been used. The largest and most complex building in Persepolis was the audience hall, or Apadana with 72 columns. Persepolis is situated some 70 km northeast of the modern city of Shiraz in the Fars Province of Iran (Persia).

Irans most recognized site is an ancient city of Persepolis. Although you can witness the size of the once "golden" city that Alexsandar the Great loved and hated so much, and that was the capital of the great persian empire of Darius the Great, there is not so much good leftovers, because Alexander did the very good job by destroying it. First name of Persepolis was PARS which ment "city of PErsians". In iranian language it is Takht-e Jamshid. It is situated about 60 km  northeast of Shiraz.
It was Darius the Great that started building it about 521 BC, and aferwards Xerex I and II and Artaxerx I,II and III. PErsepolis is unique arcitectural design that shows influences of many different cultures and styles that Darius and later other pick up from the cultures in Persian empire.  After moving from Pasargad, Persepolis was his new home, made for the great emperor.
The most popular site is The door of all nations which was built by Darius son Xerex, and you have to pass them when entering the city. Although destroyed you can still see where the buildigs were, stables, kings room, and there is a musemu with finds from Persepolis.
The best time to visit and taking photos would be early morning and evening. In the summer is pretty hot so try to avoid peak of the day.

Persepolis is the most wonderful place in the world I've ever seen.
Heavy stones, really heavy rocks, were carved and put on each other....a forest of columns each of them more than 25m high and consisted of only 2 or 3 rock blocks....with wonderful bases and heads....
There were wonderful carving on the rocks...each of them was a masterpiece....I just wanted to stay there and keep looking at them...I think there was not made by human...
Artistic forms, impressive magnificence, delicate altruism were all put together to build Persepolis.....

A huge open area that is home to some of the most outstanding historical persian buildings and culture. I visited Persepolis in summer time, however I made the mistake of going there at noon. Since this area is completely open, in summer it was very hot during mid-day. If you plan to visit this wonderful place (which you must!), go as early as possible. Also buy a hat outside from one of the many vendors!

One of the best sights in Iran is the city of Persepolis which was destroyed by Alexander the Great during one of his wars with the Persians. It is still a magnificent sight to see the pillars standing and the great halls they would have made if they were not damaged. Nearby are the tombs of some of the Persian Emperors which are also worth visiting.
