Mosul sucks. The streets smell like a sewer. Suprisingly, while I was there the locals were very friendly. You just have to avoid the types who want to cut your head off, which can be challenging if you don't know the language and are wearing a uniform. A machine gun and a squad of infantry or two helps tremendously. Watch out the occasional grenade that may be tossed your way, or sniper if you linger too long in one spot.
