It's an institution - take a walk on the promenade all the way to the little wall, kick it, walk back. No one knows why, but go there on a weekend and watch it happen... There's a bunch of beaches, some of which are quite decent, and there is a few restaurants and pubs around to sample local seafood. Pop into Kitty O'Shea's, which has a glass front out to the sea (if you can find a seat there, that is). During oyster time, with a nice pint of Guinness, it makes for an extremely relaxed afternoon.

Beach at walking distance from Galway town., rather busy on those rare days that the sun actually breaks through the clouds. Great place for a pint on the beach in the summer or a hot chocolat or hot toddy in the bar in the winter.
