This is an incredible place, and the tour was really interesting. This is the largest unoccupied jail in Europe, and has been referred to as the "Irish Bastille". It was originally built in 1796 and operated as a prison for 128 years, housing men, women, and children (up to 5 per cell!) within its walls. Some of the most famous people involved in the fight for Irish Independence were housed in this jail, and many of them were executed here as well (hangings regularly took palce in front of the building during the first 30 years of operation). The building is now a museum and guided tours are available. Many films have been made within the building, including Michael Collins (1996), In The Name of the Father (1993), and The Italian Job (1969), and U2 filmed their video for "A Celebration" here in 1982. The place is jammed packed with history, and really is worth a visit!

As a student this was great value for money. It was only 2 euro. The guide will give you a clear view on how things were in the jail.
The jail parts of the movie 'in the name of the father' were shot here.

While waiting for your tour to begin, stop by Phoenix Park and the expensive Dublin Zoo or go to the pub/cafe across the street and have a pint or two. I had time to do both.

Great place to see what prisons were like, back in the old days. Also a place where some of the most important Irish freedom fighters were held and executed.

An interesting place to learn about Irish history and the fight for independence. Well worth it if you like history and want to understand the country better.
