May 26, 2010 This is an incredible place, and the tour was really interesting. This is the largest unoccupied jail in Europe, and has been referred to as the "Irish Bastille". It was originally built in 1796 and operated as a prison for 128 years, housing men, women, and children (up to 5 per cell!) within its walls. Some of the most famous people involved in the fight for Irish Independence were housed in this jail, and many of them were executed here as well (hangings regularly took palce in front of the building during the first 30 years of operation). The building is now a museum and guided tours are available. Many films have been made within the building, including Michael Collins (1996), In The Name of the Father (1993), and The Italian Job (1969), and U2 filmed their video for "A Celebration" here in 1982. The place is jammed packed with history, and really is worth a visit! Nov 22, 2009 An interesting place to learn about Irish history and the fight for independence. Well worth it if you like history and want to understand the country better.
