Pompeii is a ruined Roman city that was buried under ash during a devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.    It was then lost for nearly 1700 years after that.

Most of Pompeii's streets and buildings have been uncovered during excavations, revealing detailed images of Roman life.  The state of preservation of the murals, mosaics, and buildings is exceptional, making Pompeii one of the finest ruin sites in the world.

Ruins of Pompei is a must visit place to anyone who happened to be in Naples or anywhere near. This archaeological site pictures the living situation of people many years back before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. There is an entrance fee unless you have bought an artecard which I did when I first arrive in Naples. If you don't carry along a book that explains everything in archaeological sites cause I usually do, you could rent an audio guide at the entrance.

You should start in the morning, when it is not so full of tourist groups and school class. i liked ways which where not so much in the central or main ways because there you can enjoy alone without 100 of other people.

have enough time for it, it is really big. colse to the ticket-shop is a information-point. There you can ask for free maps and small info-book in diff. languages.

This is a must see, but make sure you get the audio guide - otherwise you really won't know what you're looking at and you won't see how amazing it is. Also, don't go on a hot day as there isn't a lot of shade and its dusty and dirty. Make sure you wear really comfortable shoes too as its often hard to walk over the ancient roads and you'll end up walking for hours.

Well it was a heck of a lot bigger than i had invisioned--which was nice and a bit overwhelming. I was really impressed w/the frescoes still found in some of the homes. I would definitely go back. The cameos were exquisite. I bought a few while there. And of course the food was amazing. I fell in love w/all of Italy and would love nothing better than to retire there.

If I could give this place 3.5 stars, I would. I imagine a tour of the place would be a lot better with a real guide. An audio guide is useful, but there are just too many things, and eventually you can get bored very easily. Before getting bored though, just knowing what the place is and what it was is amazing in itself. I'm very happy to have visited.
