Ancient marble sculpture dating from the Roman times where it was probably part of a fountain. It has been hanging in its current place since the 17th century.
It is most famously known as an ancient lie-detector. In medieval times people that wanted to prove they were telling the truth would put there hand into the mouth. If they weren't telling the truth they would loose there hand. At want point a cheating wife foudn a way to fool the bocca and since then it doesn't 'work' anymore.

Tourist trap. The whole history around it is very interesting but it seems as if all the touristbusses stop here and spill out their contents at the same time. In high season you'll have to wait long to take your own picture, seeing all these people taking the same picture with their hand in the mouth you wonder if it is worth the bother.
