Piazza Navona is a city square in Rome, Italy. It follows the plan of an ancient Roman circus, the 1st century Stadium of Domitian , where the Romans came to watch the agones ("games"): It was known as 'Circus Agonalis' (competition arena). It is believed that over time the name changed to 'in agone' to 'navone' and eventually to 'navona'.
An Italian told me in one of my visits to this square that they used this square also as a Swimming Pool. They used to close the different entrances to the square and filled up with water. I'm not sure if this is true, but I liked the idea.
I also like this square because near it there is a very good Gelateria and Frulateria. The best one I ever tasted.

If you are in Rome, this place is recommendable. You can find a Ice Saloon where you can score delicious Italian ice cream and enjoy a good piece of architecture. The fountain in the middle of the square is definitely worth taking a picture with you in front of it! The artists who are to be found can draw you like the best and give you a life-time souvenir to hang in the living room back at home to remember the nice moments you have had. Piazza Navona is near the Pantheon, so this way you have two hotspots to admire without much traveling.
Nice place to relax, so go there!

This is my favorite place in the entire world to sit back and enjoy a meal. There are 5 or 6 outdoor restuarants along the outer perimeter of the piazza and all facing the interior. I have tried 3 of them and loved each bite. There is something about sitting back and having a great meal with a glass of wine while watching artist display thier works. I wish I was there now.

This is real Italy to me. It is where Italians share their viewpoints and speak their mind. When arriving Piazza Navona, you are not in tourist town, you are in Italy. It is where people come and go and pass through. There is just a particular feeling you get when you are here that you know this city is much more than a bunch of photo opportunities.
