Rome's history spans over 2,500 years, and it is known as 'the eternal city'.  It was a founding city of western civilization, and was the headquarters of the Roman Empire.  There are many monuments and ruins left over from this time period.

Within Rome is the Vatican City, home of Roman Catholicism, and an independent city-state. Central Rome, having escaped any major damage in WWII, remains essentially Renaissance and Baroque in character.

Rome is today the capital of Italy and one of the most visited cities in the world.

Roma Caput Mundi Roma rules the world, Romans used to say for almost 1000 years, and in this wonderful city it is common to relive the epoch of the ancient Romans, or to feel the atmosphere of the medieval papacy. Thanks to its millennial history Rome is a real city-museum. The most beautiful city indeed!

Absolutely beautiful city. The architecture, monuments, artwork, all is amazing. The only thing I disliked was the feeling of being crowded. However, a must see on anyone's list.

Definitely worth visiting for the history that is in Rome! However if you want true Italian culture venture out of the big touristy cities. Definitely crowded as well.
