San Pietro in Vincoli was founded in the 5th century to house the chains that bound St. Peter.  These chains are preserved under glass under the high altar.

The primary tourist attraction at the church though is the 16th century tomb of Pope Julius II, with Michelangelo's sculpture masterpiece Moses.  Pope Julius II planned his tomb to be placed in St. Peter's Basilica and adorned with numerous carvings by Michelangelo.  The work was scaled back though, and Pope Julius II died before much was completed, and work was stopped with one finished statue.  The statue of Moses though is one of the greatest in history, depicting a powerful and lifelike Moses right after he received the Ten Commandments tablets.

Payment Accepted:
Getting there:
From V. Cavour Metro station, cross the boulevard and walk up the flight of stairs. Turn right, and you'll go into the Piazza San Pietro in Vincoli.  The church will be on your left.

Like plenty churches in Rome: This one is really really beautifull. Pay special attention to the paintings and sculptures on the walls and ceiling that refer to, or simply are the death. It's really amazing how much death there is in thus church. Oh and yes go walk by the chains, but if you aren't religious those are justordinary chains, that carry an impressive story, but please dont forget to look at the rest of the church. That was more interresting to me then the chains.

It’s a bewildering Basilica dedicated to Saint Peter. You can see the chains that Saint Peter was tied with and Michelangelo’s splendid statue of Moses. Moses Statue is beyond imagination. It’s lifelike that you feel blood running in his veins. It’s said that when Michelangelo finished it, he hit it with his tool and said: “Moses, talk”. It’s a real masterpiece.
