Crypt
Beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini is a small space comprising several tiny chapels known as the Capuchin Crypt. The church is located on Via Veneto near Piazza Barberini in Rome. The crypt is the final resting place for over 4000 Capuchin monks and friars who died between 1528 and 1870. Bones have been arranged in intricate patterns on the walls, floors and ceilings the the chapels, and each of the six rooms in the crypt have a unique display.

When you say, "favorite place in Rome," you're supposed to mention somthing in the Vatican or the Colosseum or something like that. This place is my favorite because it is so easy to miss, yet once you've been there, you never forget it. It's a regular church in rome, but beneath is a stagering display of human bones, cappuccin monks. It's never crowded, so it only takes a half hour of your day, but it's cheap, only a small donation. We were lucky and get a personal tour of the church while we were there, and got to see a prayer chanting service(i'm sure there's a better word for it). We just spotted the guy a couple euro. See all that other stuff, but make sure to stop here for a few minutes. It's creepy beyond belief, but in an interesting way. Also, just a tip... Roman drivers are plentiful and psychotic. A great way to get away from that for an afternoon is the Via Appia Antica. You can rent bikes for 5 euro a day. Just take some water and food. It will be one of your favorite things you did in Rome.

Oddly enough this is one of the first places I visited in Rome. I'd read about it a few years ago and couldn't resist starting my visit seeing the slightly darker side of the city. The soil in the crypt is reportedly from Jerusalem making this a popular burial site. With the bones of over 4000 people to deal with the obvious solution was to display them all in the manner that they have - as sculptures. The crypt is very similar to the Osuary in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic and is realy interesting. To get here take the metro to Piazza Barberini and the church is located on Via Veneto. Easy to find and entrance is by donation.

Like to dive into the old world whenever the chance to, and then its great to bump in such wonderfull examples of the history of our past .... but then Rome itself offers so much in that area.
