The Spanish Steps were built in 1723 and are so named because of the Spanish Embassy located on the Piazza di Spagna below.  The Spanish Steps are extremely picturesque and are a popular meeting place and resting spot.  This area has long been a hangout for writers and artists including Keats, Wagner, and Goethe.  At the base of the steps is the Boat Fountain – a famous sculpture by Pietro Bernini.  At the top of the stairs is the 16th century French Holy Trinity on the Hill church as well as an excellent view.

We spent a little time lounging on the steps, but we were a little weary since every traveler we met in Rome had a bad experience here. Some were the vicitms of pick-pockets, some to scam artists - if someone comes up and ties a bracelet on your wrist, guess what...you've bought it! And they won't let you go anywhere until they get their money. Nothing bad happened to us and I enjoyed the vibe here (and getting to see all of the high end designed shops!), but just be aware of what's going on around you.

Scalinata della Trinita dei monti (the Spanish steps) were build in 1723-6 for king Louis XV and are named after the church at the top of the steps. At the end of the steps if you follow the street you will find all the designer shops next to each other. The Galleria Borghese is a small museum but it is worth seeing if you are a fan of Bernini sculptures.

The steps itself are nice but not the most impressive thing there is in Rome, it is more famous for being a meeting point, especially in the evening. If you want to be picked up by a Italian charmer this is the place to be. Very nice place to do some people watching as well. There are tons of great icecream places around.

Interesting connection to history, and a great place for people watching as it is so crowded. The church at the top is beautiful, but you have to have covered shoulders and long pants or skirt to enter. It is essentially just a staircase though, so go and see it, but it's not a place where you will spend a long time.

Spanish Steps is a wonderful place to enjoy your evening. While waiting for the sun to set, people watching at the Spanish Steps should be tried by anyone who has spare time in their pocket. Looking at old couples, newly weds, children running around or even lonely traveller is a simple way to end your day.
