Oct 2, 2008 I suspect millions of people have written about il Duomo, the huge cathedral in the centre of Milano (Milan). If you hadn't guessed, the name, incidentally, means simply "the dome". I'm not going to go into all the facts and figures - you can find them, anywhere. Suffice to say that it is an awesome building. Even if it has no religious significance for you, it's worth a visit because it stands on its own merits. If you can get up to the roof to see the figures on the top of the "spikes" (I don't know if that's still possible) then do so. There are all the usual things you expect from a great cathedral - just writ large. Much of the stained glass windows are true works of art (as opposed to the stylised nothings you often see) and the multi-coloured light cast by the sun shining through them can be stunning if you're lucky enough to be there at the right time. As usual in so many such places, photography is officially forbidden but avoid using flash and you can get some interesting shots :) As you exit the cathedral, turn left and look at the huge dark doors on the building there (sorry, can't remember what that is either!). They are cast bronze and the images on them sre stunning. Turn right instead and you're at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele which, although most famous for its shops, is also an architectural wonder in its own right. Go right through the Galleria , without taking the right turn in the middle of it, and you're faced with a large flight of steps - a scala - just across the road these lead up to the famous opera house "Teatro alla Scala", commonly known as just "La Scala". May 20, 2010 Duomo (Gothic Style)is the landmark in Milan, it stands majestically on the main square. It’s one of the biggest cathedrals in the world; it can hold up to 40,000 persons. There are 3400 statues carved out of marbles, copper… The exterior is like crochet embroidery. Inside you can see huge decorated windows, great pillars and statues. Besides, you can see the nails that were used to crucify Jesus Christ. You can to the roof where you can have a close look at some enormous statues.Duomo is one of the architectural wonders of the world. Apr 14, 2009 One of the best cathedrals I've seen. Its one of the amazing places to visit in Milan. You can climb to the top of the cathedral which gives you a great view of Milan City and the piazza (square). However, it costs 5 euros to take the stairs and 10 euros for the lift. Inside the cathedral, there are some paintings and very beautiful sculptures. A must-see place in Milan. Jun 17, 2009 May sound obvious, but piazza Duomo is the place for me in Milano. If is a sunny day you can take the elevator and see all the city from the top of the Duomo, or just see how it is at night (especially late night, when the square is empty). Beware of pigeons and thieves. Also visit Galleria Vittorio Emanuele on the left (looking at the main facade of the Duomo).
