Valley of the Temples
About Valley of the Temples
Ancient Akragas covers a huge area — much of which is still unexcavated today — but is exemplified by the famous Valle dei Templi. This comprises a large sacred area on the south side of the ancient city where seven monumental Greek temples in the Doric style were constructed during the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. Now excavated and partially restored, they constitute some of the largest and best-preserved ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself. They are listed as a World Heritage Site

Nov 22, 2008 Italy has become a run down theme park with ticket booths for each attraction. Ancient sites were never designed for tour buses and the parking is chaos. My advice is to arrive early and have patience. The Greek and Roman temples are majestic. Strolling and viewing from the ramparts of the city give you an appreciation of the size of the ancient Agrigento. May 24, 2009 Italians were always telling me the best place to visit ancient Greece is Sicily and not Greece. I always thought they were exaggerating as usual, that was until I visited the valle dei templi in Agrigento. That site is just superb. Museum right next door for some in depth information, beautfully displayed and lots of explanation. Feb 19, 2009 The Modern Town may not be that extraordinary, but the old area of the tempels is. Like going back in time. I found it very impressiv. It is probably different when the weather is not that bright, but when we visited it was warm, sunny and the whole area dried out. This made the contrast even more extrem. Apr 3, 2011 Really cool place, you can wander round for hours, just looking at all the temples and buildings. Definately worth a visit
