If you're in Siracusa you have to visit il duomo. On the outside it might look like one of the many nice churches or cathedrals in Italy but it is actually built around a Greek temple dating back to the 5th century BC. This temple was dedicated to Athena. Of the original 36 columns, 24 of them are still in their original spot. An absolute must-see.

Its a very beautiful and spiritual place. The sculpture of Saint Bartholomew by Marco d'Agrate in 1562 is one of the most macabre things I have ever seen. The toga he is wearing is made from his own skin. All of his muscles are there for you to see, because he has been stripped of his skin.

Don't mistake Siracusa from Sicily with Siracusa named places around the globe.The dome is very nice and so is the piaza.History and art fans -sharpen your pencils and listen to the explanations of the guide.
