This theatre originally dates from the hellenistic period. The greeks made use of the natural environment and built it against the hill overlooking the sea. Originally there where 2 portici to protect the spectators from the sun, only the external one remains.

The roman rebuilt the theatre because they had no use anymore for the scenic view, so they built the orchestra. But they left a big 'window' to not completly lose the view over the bay of Shiso

I remember seeing this when i was only 14, it was really nice. We went there on a nice sunny winter day and i remember sitting on the cold stone over looking the sea and just off in the distence you could just make out some land. Then an aunt comes and stand infront of me and starts ranting on about the history and what they do now in the summer months there.

Most people come for the theatre and stay for the view. They are both impressive and a good reason to visit. Loved the place. There are always a lot of people around but it is never disturbing. Lots of cats also at the foot of the theatre trying to get your attention and your food.

Besides Godfather tours, there is plenty to do in Taormina.  A classical Greek Theater still stands and offers tourists a great view of the sea from its heights.  It is still in such great shape that contemporary concerts are still offered there.  A must-see!

Teatro Greco is a historic temple which was built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC where later was used by the Romans for gladiator fights. It boasts panoramic views of the coastline. Today it is still home for some festivals.

The old greek outdoor theatre is spectacular with views of Mt. Etna on a good day. Down the road is small restaurant with a vine covered patio that serves exceptional Sicilian food.
