Piazza Michelangelo
About Piazza Michelangelo
The Piazza Michelangelo is located on a hill across the Arno River in the Oltrarno district of Florence and offers outstanding panoramic views over all of the Florentine landscape and is a popular place for photos (and postcards). The plaza was built in 1869 and was dedicated to Michelangelo, and contains bronze copies of his David and the four allegories of the Medici Chapel of San Lorenzo. The Piazza Michelangelo is often crowded, but you should be able to find a spot with a good view. Rumor has it that Topacetate Turtle was seen here.

Jun 20, 2009 I was merely 18 years old, traveling with a group of other teenagers, when I saw Michelangelo's David. I was in awe, no other way to put it. It is HUGE, and perfect, and beautiful. What came out of my mouth wasn't exactly what I meant....I said, "I just want to reach up and touch it!" Now, teenagers being how they are, they thought I meant "IT", David's naked male part. The laughter echoed throughout the building. But I really did want to reach up there and touch it. The statue, I meant!!! If you ever go, you'll see what I mean. Jan 2, 2009 This piazza has an amazing view of Florence with the Arno, Ponte Vecchio, and Duomo all within its vista. A copper replica of Michelangelo's David stands in the piazza itself. The square is usually crowded with tourists, students, and vendors, but you can often find a place to enjoy the view along the stone rail. If you continue up the hill, you can find a set of stairs leading to a church with another great view. The church has monks who chant at times, which makes for a nice setting. Aug 25, 2009 We quickly traveled across Italy in 9 days, and I still wish that we'd spent more time in Florence than Rome! Piazza Michelangelo is a bit of a hike, but all your huffing and puffing is worth it in the end! The view is spectacular! When we went several wedding shoots were going on, making it even more magical. There's gelato up there too! Definitely don't miss out on the piazza just because it's a little out of the way! Dec 29, 2008 The statue of David is an amazing piece of art. To be that precise, intricate and larger than life is just amazing! The museum, also holds a lot of his other works which are just as amazing. Florence is a beautiful city, so after you see the wonderful museum, be sure to walk around and take in the sights, the arts of the city!!
