Can construction and design mistakes turn a building into an attraction seen by millions?  In the case of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the answer is yes.

While the building is a fine piece of Romanesque architecture, the main attraction is the way it leans and seems to defy gravity.   For a while, people were not sure if it could defy gravity any longer, so a reinforcement project was started and people were barred from climbing it.  It reopened a few years ago, so you can climb the steps to the belfry again.

The 800 year old tower is about 182 feet tall and is 16 feet off center.  It started tilting soon after construction began, and has gotten steady worse over the years.

Normal 0 The Leaning Tower of Pisa This freestanding bell tower is a really famous tourist attraction, which is often listed, as a must be seen sight. It is quite amazing if you have already read and heard much about a special sight and then all of a sudden you are standing in front of it. Of course, this also applies for the Tower of Pisa and I totally enjoyed the trip to this city. The architecture and the tower’s history are pretty interesting and it's definitely worth knowing more about these facts. The tower is a tourist magnet because everybody is interested in a nice photo taken from the right angle. I won’t blame you because it’s an absolutely nice building. You are also allowed to climb up the tower but it’s not really cheap on the one hand and you sometimes have to be extremely patient because of the long queues on the other hand. The atmosphere around the tower and along the streets nearby gives you a taste of Italian tourism. It’s your own decision if you like it or not. Heaps of stalls offer the possibility of buying a lasting souvenir from Pisa and who doesn’t want to have one?

Try to be there early as it gets crowded and photo ops get harder, esp when trying to do a pose with the tower. The tour of the tower is a must! They do it every 30 min and it's relatively safe (just be careful when going up). You can't bring any bags inside (you leave it inside the lockers, it comes with the tour cost). The train ride from Florence was only 6 euros each, about an hour. We walked from the train station to the tower, about 30 min. A lot of photo ops. A lot of students too (there's a big university in the middle). We got lost going back to the train station and ended up inside the campus. It was awesome!!!

I heard a lot of mixed reviews about the Leaning Tower, but I'm glad that I went to see it for myself. It's an amazing thing to realize that the top leans almost 4m from there it should stand! It's an incredible sight. And worth a visit to get the standard tourist photo of you "pushing" it over!

We opted for a day trip to see Pisa. We left Cinque Terre in the morning, spent the day in Pisa, then continued on to Rome that evening. It was plenty of time to check out the city and still had a lot of time to spend at the Leaning Tower.

Europe is one of my favorite places because of all the beautiful architecture there. I went to Pisa as part of my tour of Spain, France, and Italy with my Spanish class. Italy was so beautiful and seeing the Tower was an awesome experience because it is so famous. The Baptistry of St. John that was by it was equally as amazing just because of the acoustics. We weren't allowed to sing inside but one of the people who worked there did it for us. It sounded so awesome!

Don't bother going. That's the only thing to see in Pisa. If you do go, watch your purses and wallets. This is by far the worst place I've ever seen as far as pickpockets are concerned. I can't stress it enough. Be paranoid because you are a target.

Ladies will literally hand you their infants and go through your pockets. It's out of control. Take nothing with you. This place is a dump. Would never go back.
