Canals of Venice
About Canals of Venice
Venice’s canals are a large part of what makes the city famous. The canal system dates back to the 5th century and there are around 150 canals in Venice, which are used to transport people and goods around the city. Walking along the bridges and footpaths beside the canal, you can watch people go about their daily work and toss crates of items onto a dock or onto the canalside. The 2 mile long Grand Canal is Venice’s main waterway, and is a broad and busy S-shaped passage that is lined with ornately decorated Renaissance-era palaces.
The traditional romantic view of Venice involves taking a nighttime gondola ride (with or without music) with a loved one down one of Venice’s narrow canals or along the Grand Canal. Other options to traverse the water include the vaporetto (water bus) or the traghetto (a public gondola for short trips across the Grand Canal). Payment Accepted:

The canals are best accesable from Venice or Wahington Boulevard, near Dell Avenue!

Oct 9, 2011 Forty years ago I was living in Germany, and this was my first holiday outside Germany. This is well worth your time. As a practical matter, the town owes its existence to Attila the Hun, but no one ever seems to give him credit. As his army destroyed many local cities, the citizens fled into the swamp, and began to drain it --hence the canals. But the town is sinking and will be underwater, eventually. Even when I was there, flooding was a real problem. I recall Saint Mark's Square as underwater, so that there were planks set up so you could walk through the square. I also recall my wife wanted to feed the pigeons, so we bought some seed at a store. One pigeon saw us make the buy and told his friends. When my wife got to the plaza she was attacked by hundreds of birds. It was like a scene out of the movie, The Birds. Sep 25, 2008 Visit a nice place in Venice's center wich most Angelenos do not even have a idea that it exist: The Venice Canels! It's just a few blocks away from the boardwalk - but if feels todaly different! If you see the canels, you know where the name Venice comes from! You'll find nice bridges, eclectic homes and waterways. It's best accessed from either Venice Boulevard or Washington Boulevard, near the Dell Avenue Oct 1, 2009 I spent 5 days in Venice this April and fell in love with this magic city standing on the water with its magnificent castles. I was very sunny and warm, u could feel nice smell of old stones mixed with smell of candles. It's a very relaxing city, especially if you just walk along its narrow streets with stops in nice Italian cafes with gorgeous Italian food. Venice is a piece of Art I would say, that everyone should visit at least once in a life. Nov 25, 2009 The Gondolas are expensive, but try to barter them down on a weekday when it`s a little less busy. They wanted 100 Euros, I got one for 60 Euros for 1/2 hour which was more than enough time to see tha less travelled canals and Marco Polo`s house. One more thing crossed off my bucket list! Aug 7, 2009 Like Rome, i thought Venice was overestimated by what i heard from friends who traveled there. Well, they were actually right... The canals, the atmosphere, the architecture... Everything is breathtaking. Every corner, every bridge, is a place to take a picture.
