Venice, gateway to the Orient, is one of the few cities in the world that can be truly described as unique. Over an extraordinarily long period, the city was embellished with monuments of rare splendour that today make it a tourist attraction like none other in the entire world....A very beautiful one where I've ever wanted to go back...

Definitely worth going to, but you really only need to spend half a day there. If you are going to spend more time than a day, then I recommend you stay on Lido. Great little town, 45 min water bus to Venice, and so much cheaper...for everything. Don't get suckered into a $10 cup of coffee in Piazza San Marcos. There's even a decent beach and some nightlife, which you won't find in Venice.

It might seem like a tourist trap or a theme park but Venice doesn't have to be that way. Stay a while off the main tourist trail and people live here, kids play in the laneways along the canals and travelling around on the vaporettos is great fun with views to match. Throw in a kooky restaurant run by 2 sisters near the Peggy Guggenheim gallery and its a memorable few days.

Venice is beautiful, but too touristy for my taste. My cousin and I were constantly lost, but we did find a great wine bar owned by a fellow named Mario who was so kind he even walked us almost all the way back to our hotel when we got lost, leaving his bar open to take care of us!

The best time to visit Venice is in November. It might be cold but without tourists. No lines anywhere. The best possibility to explore the city "como un veneziano". And also the best time to visit museums and galleries.
