Mount Fuji (Fuji-san) is the highest mountain in Japan, rising to 12,388 feet/ 3776m . Visible from Tokyo on a clear day, the beautiful cone-shaped mountain is located west of the city, surrounded by lakes in a national park.
Mt. Fuji is named for the Buddhist fire goddess Fuchi and is sacred to the Shinto goddess Sengen-Sama, whose shrine is found at the summit. It is the holiest of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains." Every summer, thousands of pilgrims and tourists climb to the summit, many of them hiking throughout the night to witness the sunrise from the summit. This is about Climbing Mt.Fuji ( Fuji-san ) from city Fujinomiya.
Climbing fuji-san is a must-do in Japan.
You can hike Fuji-san early in the morning to see the shadow of Mt.Fuji traveling across the landscape.
But many people also hike Fuji-san in the night to see rising sun from the summit! (There are some lodging possibilities on the route, but be aware it is not like hiking in Europe, so you will not find single or double rooms - there are just sleeping dorms! And it might be quite cold in the night) Hiking during the day is quite exhausting because of the climate - except for the summit (it's always windy up there) temperature and humidity are quite high. Here you can find much more info about this trail to Fuji-san !

July and August are the official climbing season. In the other months it's free to climb but you don't find accommodations, you can't buy food or water. Most of the visitors climb form the 5th station. You can reach it by public transport. But if you want to climb the whole mountain it's OK from the bottom, just the altitude is more. The weather is bad -- you can'T see the amazing view, and don't be upset if you see: it's extremely dirty! Garbage everywhere. By take care: Altitude Sickness. So if you aren't tough, just do it slowly. Have a nice climb!

I didn't have the opportunity to climb Fuji Mountain but we were in Hakone and we just stopped to have a look at it. I used to hear that Fuji Mountain is shy, but I didn't believe that till I visited Japan. The mountain was hidden behind the clouds and we waited for a long time to just have a look at its top. It was suspended between earth and the sky.

You have to see the sunrise on the summit of Mt Fuji. T do that I recommend you to climb to the 8th/9th level of Mt Fuji, spent the night in the shelter (there is one on every level) and start climbing at 1.00 a.m. to reach the sunrise at about 3.30 a.m. Just incredible!

Just climbed Fuji-san, did it from Tokyo, leaving at 17.00, start walking (5th station) around 22.30 and arrived around 5 in the morning. Many many many people, but defenetly worth it...
