About Matsumoto Castle /
Matsumoto Castle (Matsumotojo) is one of the most complete and beautiful among Japan's original castles. It is also a good example of a so called "hirajiro", a castle built on the plain rather than on a hill or mountain.
Matsumotojo's castle tower and smaller, second turret were built from 1592 to 1614 and were both well defended, as peace was not yet fully secured at the time. In 1635, when no more military threats existed, a third, barely defended turret for moon viewing was added to the castle. Payment Accepted:
Getting there:
The castle is a 15 minute walk or a 5 minute bus ride on the "Town Sneaker" Northern Course bus loop line from JR Matsumoto Sta

Sep 19, 2009 Provides great insight on feudal era in Japan. Climbing up it is tough because the stairs were built to slow down enemies who might invade (each step is like 3ft high). Every room is stuffed with ancient artifacts, including this really cool samurai armor, which I couldn't get a good look at because about a dozen Germans were crowding around it. Jun 20, 2009 Very big, manny levels, we had not the time to take an easy look at it. To bad. But still very much apricieted.
