I was lucky enough to be in Shimoda for the annual Black Ships festival. It is a comemorative event for when the Americans first came to Japan. It had gorgeous scenery when driving down from Tokyo. You are driving the coastline the entire way down, and then on the other side you have luscious greenery. If you have a chance, I recommend seeing the Black Ships festival first hand - there is a parade, Okinawan dancers, and tons of other sights to visit. Eat at the pizza shop called 'One' - best pizza you will ever taste!
