Takayama's old town has been beautifully preserved, with many buildings and whole streets of houses dating from the Edo Period (1600-1868), when the city thrived as a wealthy town of merchants.

very old area with shops restaurants and museums.
if you don`t like crowded tokyo you should spend time in takayama.
even if it was raining all day long when i went there
i was able to enjoy.

Walking among the dark brown wooden Old Private Houses was fantastic. It was good to fell the atmospehere of the shops, coffee houses and sake breweries. And the red rickshaws in the brown.
