One part of Hiroshima that got destroyed in the bombing never got rebuilt and is now the Peace Memorial Park. It is dotted with memorials. There is the cenotaph, containing the names of all the known victims of the bombing. Every year on August the 6th it is updated. The cenotaph frames the Flame of Peace that only will be extinguished once all nuclear weapens are destroyed. Next to it are the A-Bomb museum and the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. This last one contains a register with the names and photographs of the vicitms together with their testimonies.

In the northern part of the park stands the Children's Peace monument, built in rembembrance of Sadako Sasaki who at the age of 10 developed leukimia and decided to fold 1000 paper cranes. This is an ancient Japanese custom believed to make the folders whish come true. She never reached her goal but her classmates folded the rest and started a campain to erect the monument. To this day people from Japan and all over the world send folded cranes to Hiroshima. There is also the Korean A-Bomb Memorial. 1 in 10 victims from the A-bomb were Korean shipped from their motherland to work in Japanese factories. Further up is the Burial Mound containing all the remains of the victims who never got identified.

It's huge and impressive. There is a huge Bell that with a sign that says: "Let all nuclear arms and wars be gone, and the nations live in peace! May it rings to all corners of the world to meet the ears of every man, for in it throb and palpitate the hearts of its peace - loving donors.Step forward and toll this bell for peace!" there's also a tomb where you can read : "Let all the souls rest here in peace for we shall not repeat the evil." Besides, there's the children's peace monument and the chamber of commerce building, the sole thing that remained after the bomb.

Serene place. Despite the heavy history it is a good place to relax and have lunch or enjoy the cherry blossom. Also a good place to recover from a visit to the A-Bomb Museum. Loved the Children's Peace Monument, the story of the little girl trying to fold 1000 paper cranes breaks my heart every time I hear it.

It's a very impressive place. The brutality, the memory, the hope, the respect, the past and the future in 1 place. Flame of Peace, Children's Peace Monument, and the museum.

The Memorial Peace Park is near ground zero and makes you contemplate and reflect on what happened 65 years ago.
