Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. Miyajima is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on top of the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views.
While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine-island". This is because the island is so closely related to its shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water.

I love this Island not too far from Hiroshima... You get there usually by Ferry which runs every ten minutes I believe. When We got there, it was raining a bit but this was during the rainy season. When you first start wondering around you'll see some shops and some wonderful places to eat, and you can walk all the way up to the torii gate and enter the Shrine. What I thought was so cool was how much tradition was mixed in with more modern qualities... And a memorable feature of Miyajima is the animals like deer... They are etremely tame and Are literaly walking around all over the island, in uncrowded shopping areas, and other places... They'll try to get a nip at you though so be careful!

1 of the most impressive place in Japan. It's true the torii gate is wonderful, you can see it far from the sea, but it's more. You can spend there more than a day, just walking, and walking, up and down the hill, and streets.
Fun: In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourist.
Don't miss:
The shrine's halls and pathways on stilts.
Gojunoto (Five-Storied Pagoda)
Senjokaku (Hall of One Thousand Tatami Mats) (Toyokuni Shrine)
Daishoin Temple

It's a great place for a picnic and light hiking. Watch out for the mangy deer that like to steal your food (they are sacred- so don't do anything to them). The little stores are quaint. The view from the top of the island is amazing!
