Hall
This huge hall was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587 but never completed. It was left unpainted and now the beams hang full of pictures and paintings. The five storey pagoda right next to it was built in 1407 and stands there in all it's colourfull splendour.

Getting there:
Senjokaku is a ten minute walk from the Miyajima ferry pier, on the hill just beside Itsukushima Shrine.

The pagoda in determinate the area with its deep orange colour and 5 storeys (pproximately 28 meters high). Senjokaku is the popular name of Hokoku Shrine. Senjokaku, which literary means "Hall of a thousand mats", actually covers floor space equivalent to 857 tatami mats. It's old, and I like the old wooden buildings, but it's quite empty. Just look around and go up to the hill. :o)

If you got 100 yen to spare you can visit this hall. There are some nice and sometimes funny paintings hanging up there and the view from the hall is also nice. But you can also not pay and just look in from the outside, the pagoda is also free of charge.
