Himeji Castle
About Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle is located in the center of Himeji City, about 50 kilometers west of Kobe and about 650 kilometers west of Tokyo. It takes about fours hours by bullet train from Tokyo.
Himeji Castle is nicknamed "White Heron" Castle because of its white walls which are covered with white plaster. The reason for using white plaster is that it is fireproof. Like other surviving Japanese castles, Himeji Castle is built of wood, not stones, and so fire prevention is very important. Payment Accepted:

Aug 2, 2008 This castle-turned museum really maintains the old feel of the castle-- the layout and structure remains intact, with a couple extra hand railings to get up the impenetrable staircases. The halls are now lined with historical artifacts, such as poems written by shoguns and, of course, the families' trademark armor and weapons. You wind through all the areas of the main castle, making your way to the top floor in ceremonial fashion, and get to see the "suicide quarters" and the well where all those Japanese horror stories originate. Aug 27, 2009 I think this is the most impressive castle in Japan. Huge and white, you can see it from far. It's a small labirynth, you can walk a lot in the garden and in the building. You have to visit it, if it's only a quick stop in Himeji (only 10 minutes walk from the station). Apr 20, 2009 One of only a handful of original castles left in Japan and by far one of the best castles to visit. An easy day trip from the Osaka/Kyoto area, Himeji castle is one of Japan's most visited castles and is often regarded as one of the most beautiful as well.
